Preserving the Waterfront, Preparing for Tomorrow

Community Stories

This August, when a Great Lakes cruise ship glides into the Ludington harbor, passengers will step ashore ready to explore downtown shops, stroll Waterfront Park, dine in local restaurants, and discover everything that makes Mason County special. For many of them, it will be their first introduction to our community.

What those visitors won’t see is the careful planning that made their arrival possible.

Before Ludington could confidently welcome cruise vessels, the city needed to know whether Waterfront Park’s seawall — the only location capable of accommodating cruise ships — was ready. Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation for Mason County, made possible through the Tom Coleman Fund and Mason County Funds for the Community, and matching funds from the Chamber Alliance of Mason County and the Ludington Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, the city completed a professional underwater assessment of the seawall.

The inspection confirmed that the seawall is in good structural condition and capable of supporting waterfront activities, including potential cruise vessel accommodations. That important first step has already produced results: two cruise ship visits are scheduled for August 2026, marking Ludington’s debut as a Great Lakes cruise destination.

While the arrival of new visitors is exciting, the project was never just about attracting cruise ships. It was about protecting one of Mason County’s most treasured public spaces while thoughtfully considering new opportunities for the community. The assessment provides valuable information that will guide future maintenance, preserve the waterfront for public use, and help community leaders make informed decisions about its future.

The project aligns with the Community Foundation’s strategic priority of Community Development: Recreation and Quality of Life. By investing in the preservation and thoughtful stewardship of Waterfront Park, the Foundation is helping one of Mason County’s beloved public gathering places remain safe, welcoming, and vibrant for residents while enhancing the experiences of visitors who discover Ludington for the first time.

“The completed seawall assessment provides critical baseline infrastructure information that will help guide future maintenance, capital improvement planning, and long-term waterfront preservation efforts,” said Heather Tykoski of the City of Ludington. “The project also reinforced the importance of balancing economic opportunity with environmental stewardship and public access.”

As the first cruise ships arrive this summer, they’ll bring more than new visitors to Ludington’s shoreline. They’ll demonstrate what can happen when a community invests not only in new opportunities, but also in protecting the places that make people want to visit and that residents are proud to call their own. The Community Foundation’s investment helped keep Ludington’s waterfront both a welcoming front porch for guests and a cherished gathering place for those who are fortunate to call Mason County home.
