Community Development
Recreation and Quality of Life
We are building a vibrant community by investing in programs and initiatives that promote the development of new, existing, and interconnected trails. We are also focused on increasing and enhancing inclusive and engaging public spaces and recreational activities, and on fostering vibrant, diverse, and sustainable arts-and-culture opportunities, ultimately cultivating a more inclusive, active, and connected community for all.
Pere Marquette Conservation Park Community Access Site
Pere Marquette Charter Township has completed construction of the Pere Marquette Conservation Park Community Access Site at the mouth of the Pere Marquette River. This $1.84 million initial phase of the 290 acre park development project enhances accessibility, addresses historical hazards, and supports tribal fish harvest traditions and was supported by multiple co-investments, including grants from the Community Foundation, Thomas William Paine Charitable Fund, and the Pennies from Heaven Foundation.
The plan for further development of the Pere Marquette Conservation Park includes restrooms, picnic areas, playgrounds, sports fields, a swimming beach, winter sports area, and hiking and biking trails. The Pere Marquette Conservation Park project will restore the former Dow industrial site, providing environmental protection and enrich the lives of Mason County residents and visitors.
Meade Township Pickleball Court
Investments in recreation opportunities across the county removes transportation as a barrier and makes them accessible to all. Meade Township residents can now enjoy a brand new pickleball court at the Meade Township Park, thanks to a Community Foundation grant provided by Mason County Funds for the Community and the Robert R. and Joan Hasenbank Fund. The project, which began in December 2023, was completed in August with an official grand opening ceremony held on September 8th. The project has garnered strong community support, which could lead to future park developments. “We feel that community support of this project has been very positive,” shared Susan Hasenbank of Meade Township. “This could lead to other park development such as playground equipment for families in the community to utilize.”

John’s Place After School Program
This new program is filling a specific gap in after-school options for area middle and high school students. With the support of the Community Foundation and other donors, John’s Place is well on its way to becoming a hub for youth development, offering a safe space, social interaction, caring adults, and opportunities to explore new skills and interests.
Building a Stronger Community.
For good. For ever.
