Caritas Food Pantry Addresses Food Insecurity with Foundation Grant

Community Stories

In the spring of 2024, the Caritas Food Pantry in Custer, Michigan received a $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation for Mason County. This funding was made possible through the Rick & Mary Ann Randall Fund and the Mason County Funds for the Community and supported the pantry’s mission to provide nutritional food options to a growing number of families in need.

In 2023 alone, the pantry fulfilled over 1,942 requests for assistance from 749 registered client households, reaching a total of 4,661 individuals in Mason and surrounding counties. Among those served were 1,963 seniors over 60, 854 children under 18, and 467 veterans. The grant came at a critical time, as rising food costs and increasing demand placed additional strain on the pantry’s resources.

Through strategic purchasing from Feeding America, the grant allowed the pantry to acquire a wider variety of food items at reduced costs, ensuring that the funds stretched as far as possible.

“Clients informed us of the positive impact the additional food items had for their households. They were also able to help us with ideas for future purchases,” said Deb Hanna, a member of the Caritas Food Pantry Board. Based on feedback, the pantry hopes to expand its offerings in the future to include more fresh fruits and vegetables.

Caritas acknowledged the grant’s impact by extending warm gratitude to the Foundation and its fund partners: “A big thank you for helping us make a difference in so many lives!”
