From Mason County to Oakland University: Elliette Thomas

Community Stories

Elliette Thomas, a Rick and Mary Ann Randall Scholarship recipient, was reminded of how far she had come when she returned to Oakland University this fall. “I’m a lot more confident in being able to get my assignments done and taking exams,” she said. “Being back on campus my second year has been wonderful.”

A 2025 graduate of Mason County Central High School, Elliette earned dual-enrollment credits through West Shore Community College. Doubling up during high school enabled her to return to Oakland University this year as a junior. She currently balances a rigorous schedule while majoring in psychology.

Elliette’s course of study is very personal. During the summer of 2024, her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Experiencing that difficult season with her mom — who is now in remission — inspired Elliette’s future. She hopes to earn her master’s degree and become a child life specialist in a hospital setting.

“When my mom was diagnosed … it was definitely a difficult time, not fully understanding what it means and what kind of treatment she would be going through,” Elliette recalled. “I want to provide that information to children in their own aspect, if they’re going through treatment or if their parents are, to make them feel comforted and safer.”

Although stepping onto a larger campus in the Detroit metropolitan area was a big shift from her high school graduating class of 100, Elliette has found a cozy home in her dorm with her high school best friend and roommate, Madi. The girls enjoy gathering with friends across the hall on the weekends to play favorite games like Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, watch movies, study together, and cheer on the Golden Grizzlies at campus basketball games.

Elliette appreciates the peace of mind provided by the Rick and Mary Ann Randall Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation. “I was very, very appreciative when I got that scholarship,” Elliette said. “It gave me a sense of comfort knowing that I can continue my education with a little help behind me and support from everybody.” She encourages any hesitant student to fill out an application, noting, “It’s so worth it, even if it takes a little bit of time.” Looking ahead, Elliette added, “I’m just so excited for the future rather than scared of it. I’m excited to learn, to experience, and to make new relationships.”

If you’re a high school or homeschooled senior, a current college student, an early college senior, or an adult student, the Community Foundation for Mason County may have a scholarship for you. We manage one of the largest scholarship programs in our area, with $289,000 committed to students in more than 154 new and renewed scholarships awarded each year.
