The Sable Points Lighthouse Keepers Association (SPLKA) celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Ludington North Breakwater Lighthouse with a dazzling laser light show on June 8, 2024. The spectacular event was made possible in part by a grant from the Community Foundation for Mason County through the Don Birtwistle Fund.
“This new concept for celebration in Ludington provides non-triggering sounds for those who cannot enjoy the fireworks display multiple times a year,” said Jack Greve, Director of SPLKA.
The light show drew large crowds of locals and vacationers alike and garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback. The anniversary event took place in conjunction with other popular community events, including the Love Ludington Street Party, the Ludington Lakestride, and Blessing of the Boats with all events surpassing attendance expectations. SPLKA was thrilled to provide its free event to an unlimited group of viewers during the dynamic weekend.
The project was a momentous celebration that included collaborations with Pure Ludington, Blessing of the Boats, 102.7 WMOM, and many other businesses and groups throughout Mason County. “Our goals were reached in many ways, including significant recognition from the State of Michigan with a state tribute,” said Greve.
Greve hinted that future light shows might be possible. “With a successful show, SPLKA, the Ludington Police Department, and the US Coast Guard Station Manistee will all have a better outline of what is possible with lasers on Ludington’s Pier.”
